Report: Science Museum

Introduction:
The aim of the following report is to describe the exhibitions provided by the Science Museum and the activities that can be done in it. Also, the possibility of having a group visit will be analysed.

Facilities and Exhibitions:
The Science Museum has a wide range of exhibits that can be explored within the building. Based on my own experience, some of the most interesting ones are the insect dissection room, the prehistoric and ancient exhibit, the planetarium and also the robot building facilities.

Group Visit:
Even if the place offers plenty of interesting activities that can appeal to many students, I would not personally recommend it due to safety reasons. Firstly, the halls of the museum are way too small for a big group of people, which can eventually lead to an overcrowding of the facilities. Secondly, all the exhibitions are shown through glass, that can be a hazard for people in case of accident. Lastly, some of the exhibitions, such as the planetarium, completely rely on silence for the experience to be proper, and unfortunately asking a big crowd of young people to be quiet is an impossible task to fulfil.

Conclusion:
The Science Museum is a beautiful place that surely can be enjoyed by many people. Unfortunately, it is not suitable for what the school is searching due to its layout, excessive glass and also the need for low noise levels. I would recommend looking for a place that can better accommodate big groups of people.

Proposal: Historical Places to Visit

The aim of the following proposal is to highlight the different activities that can be done during the on-day study trip planned in our history class. There are many possibilities, but I would thoroughly recommend activities such as visiting the national museum, exploring historical districts, and also having lunch in a history inspired café.

National Museum:
The National Heritage Museum is an exceptional institution that provides and showcases a wide amount of artefacts and exhibits from various eras of our history. The museum provides interactive displays and educational programs designed specifically for students like us.

Historical Districts:
The Humberstone Historical Offices are a beautifully preserved saltpetre area with architecture dating back to the 1800s. The place also provides guided tours that bring the history of the area to life, highlighting significant events, historical buildings and the fascinating currency that was used by the residents.

History Café:
“War of the Pacific” is the name of a café that has brought a lot of attention during the last few years due to its fascinating and never seen before concept. The place has a collection of items used during the war, and it is decorated with breathtaking paintings that cover the walls of the café.

Personally, I would be more inclined towards visiting the historical district since there is nothing more fascinating than visiting the place where history happened, but the national museum would also be a great experience if the aim is to learn from many places at the same time.

Writing Test 1

Dear Mr. Wilden,

I am writing this letter in order to let you know about the high levels of dissatisfaction my friend and I experienced during the poorly organized show of “Fairplay”, the band that had a one-night-only event at the Grisham Hall last week.

Firstly, we were not informed that this was a “general admission” show, which left us extremely disappointed since we were expecting seats, as the advertisement said. Secondly, the supporting act was oddly long and they hardly left any time left for Fairplay’s show, which did not last longer than 45 minutes. Lastly, despite the hall being new, there was not a single place to buy food or drinks, so by the time the show was over, we were starving.

As you can see, our experience was fairly unpleasant and we do not think it was the band’s fault since they gave us an amazing show despite having such short time left.

In order to make amends for the bad experience, which was caused by the poor organization of GPL Entertainment, we would like to suggest a few actions that you could take into consideration. The first one is refunding my friend and I the full amount of the ticket we bought, or giving us a free pass for the next concert of Fairplay.

Looking forward to hearing from you again.
Faithfully yours,
Paulina Moraga

Facilities in the Seafront (Essay)

Unfitting facilities have always been an issue when it comes to cities located next to the ocean. There has been a discussion going on in the radio programme regarding what kind of facilities should receive permission to be built in the seafront. In the following essay, I will discuss and give reasons on the different option available.

The first option we could consider is beach volley facilities and a park. Most of the people are aware that sports facilities should be a priority because it can encourage adults and children to have a more active life. Unfortunately, a downside of this kind of facility is that most of them only work during the summer because people are not used to play beach volleyball or snorkelling during the winter.

The second option would be to build a hotel. The city already has a decent amount of hotels and places to stay for the night, and it is also true that the city does not need any more closed spaces. Nevertheless, a luxurious hotel by the seafront could open up to 50 work positions, while also bringing a richer economy to the city due to the amount of tourists that might be interested in staying the night during their free time.

To sum up, both of these options can be beneficial for the members of the community, but only one of them will have usage during the 365 days of the year. This is why the hotel should receive planning permission to be built in the seafront.

Anne with an E (Review)

“Anne with an E” is a Canadian TV show produced by the CBC, starring well known young actors and actresses such as Amybeth McNulty and Lucas Jade Zumann. The show was aired on Netflix and lasted around three seasons until the company decided to cancel it.

The story starts with a young girl with bright orange hair and green eyes who is an orphan desperately searching for a family, which leads her to be a big extroverted who tries to impress everyone with her knowledge, coming off as mildly annoying.

A few episodes later, we get to see how a family mistakenly adopts her because they wanted a boy to help them with the farm, but the orphanage sent them this girl. After this incident, the father of the family tried to give her back, but it did not work because he thought she was way too special and cute to let her go. This is how Anne’s “family life” starts.

The series is set in the late 1890s, which supports this conservative vision that that only men can do hard labour, such as working on a farm.

The reason why I fell in love with this series is because it portrays various topics such as racism, female empowerment, education, gender bias, sexual harassment, LGBTQ+ rights and much more but always keeping respectful boundaries. Also, this series lets us get to know Anne and her family in depth, which is heart warming and nice to see.

E-Portfolio Activity: Review

During September, many musical projects have seen the light and Olivia Rodrigo’s second album titled “GUTS” has not been the exception. The album was critically acclaimed even before it was released because of powerful singles such as “vampire” and “bad idea right?”

“all american b*tch” is one of the songs that I feel like it stood out the most when the album was released due to its mood changes and 2000’s like pop-rock sound. The emotions of the song convey the feeling of not being perfect enough for a society often seen as perfect (referring to America) and finishes off with Olivia trying to stay calm after screaming her lungs out in order to show off her rage.

Personally, I think this song perfectly describes the feeling of not being taken seriously just for being a female and also describes how younger women feel when not reaching societal expectations. I think there is this universal girlhood experience of being expected to be quiet and mature and if you do not behave like that, you have automatically failed as a woman. This is exactly what Olivia expresses through her song with a sarcastic tone and an angelic voice.

I would like to recommend “GUTS” to every woman in her 20s as Olivia describes what she is going through during that age and a lot of people can relate to her experiences. Also, I think pop-rock lovers would also enjoy this song and album due to its similarities with artists like Avril Lavigne and early Paramore.

Educational Center Programmes and Their Usefulness

Introduction:
Schools and colleges have the task of preparing students for their future working life. In this report, the current programmes of educational centers around Viña del Mar are evaluated in order to measure how useful they are. At the end of the report, some suggestions on how to improve the programmes are added.

Current programmes:
In Viña del Mar, there are plenty of educational centers that include programmes such as economy, finances, and paperwork filling. A survey was directed to workers in order to understand how much this knowledge was actually acquired during school. Only 25% of the people answered that they learned those skills during their time studying, while the rest learned them as they went along since they started working.

Programmes usefulness:
As we already know, not many workers acquire their skills by participating in the programmes, which means that the idea is clear, but it is not applied correctly to reach the goal of preparing students for their future working lives. This may be happening because of the lack of resources to hire professionals on the matter, or maybe there is a lack of innovative measures that affect the way students internalize the information provided.

Recommendations:
To improve the programmes recently mentioned, these recommendations can be applied:

  • Hire people who are professionals on the topic.
  • Make the classes more attractive by adding innovative elements.
  • Take the students on trips where they can visit facilities related to working life.

By applying those recommendations, the programmes might improve.
